Which King Down Comforter Is For Me? Reviews

Every where we look these days, there are stores offering discounts and sales on bedding and linens. It can be confusing as we want a comfortable night’s sleep, but are not sure where to turn or even how to choose the best king down comforter to meet our needs.

We know how hard it is to choose a comfortable bed. There are so many features that we look at when choosing a mattress, and selecting the one that will allow us to sleep the night through in comfort can be difficult. Some were over-stuffed, some were like sleeping on a rock, but ultimately a choice had to be made. Once you have a king size bed, you realize that all the accessories for that bed are much more expensive than for smaller beds. Now, all those decisions are back as you try to decide on your next investment in comfort, your king down comforter.

We often look to nature to solve our problems and give us ideas. Water fowl, such as ducks and geese, stay warm and protected by the double layer of feathers that surrounds their body. The soft layer close to their skin is the down. These feathers are much finer and do not have a hard core like the outer feathers. They tend to hold together and form a layer of insulation against the cold that works well for them, and for us.

One of the first decisions you will need to make is regarding the level of warmth you need while you are sleeping. Do you like the bed very warm? Do you normally use several blankets and dress warmly for bed? Are you like others who barely need a blanket and like cool and breathable covers? These are things to consider when choosing your down duvet. Geese do not have to make these decisions, nature takes care of that, but we need to understand our needs and options to choose the right level of warmth.

King down comforters are not inexpensive, but we need to consider both the immediate costs, and the durability and years of use ahead. There are many questions to ask when shopping for your comforter from the way it is manufactured to the materials used.

One of the most important elements of a down comforter, is the degree of warmth and insulation required. This is described using the term “fill power.” The more expensive down tends to have larger clumps of feathers that cling together so that you have a higher density of down, and yet it is very light weight. Down of lesser quality will have smaller clusters and less volume so that you will essentially have less protection. You will find that the degree of “fill power” is described as 700 28 ounces or 800 44 ounces. The first example would not be as fluffy as the second, nor as warm. The prices will vary depending on those weights.

The quality of the feathers is very important, but so is the way the comforter is put together. The design should include baffles in the form of boxes or channels that keep the feathers together so you don’t have cold spots or feathers bunching up throughout the duvet. Also, it is important that the material used for the cover be of high quality. Cotton with a high thread count is very popular as the higher the number of threads per inch, the less likely it is to leak feathers, and the longer it will last. Most down duvets will come with a warranty. It may be worth spending a little more to have a longer warranty. If the company who made it only offers protection for one year, it likely will not last a lifetime.

A final important step is to buy a quality duvet cover to help keep your king down comforter clean and safe. Covers are easy to clean and increase the life of your duvet considerably.
